# Wat is Chamilo?

Chamilo LMS is een *learningbeheersysteem* dat is ontworpen ter ondersteuning van effectief online onderwijs (vaak aangeduid als *e-learning*). Het is ‘gratis’ software die is ontwikkeld in samenwerking met verschillende bedrijven, organisaties en individuen volgens een model dat bekend staat als *open-source*, maar met strengere ethische waarden.

Dit betekent dat u Chamilo vrij kunt downloaden en gebruiken, op voorwaarde dat u de licentievoorwaarden accepteert, (gedetailleerd onder de GNU / GPLv3-licentie[1](http://www.gnu.org/licenses/quick-guide-gplv3.html)). Zolang u zich ertoe verbindt ze te onderhouden, verleent dit u vier essentiële vrijheden: de vrijheid om de software **te** gebruiken, **te bestuderen**, **te wijzigen** en **te distribueren**.

Behalve dat het door tientallen mensen over de hele wereld gezamenlijk is ontwikkeld; Chamilo wordt ook ondersteund door *The Chamilo Association,* een non-profitorganisatie met als belangrijkste doel het platform te ondersteunen en de continuïteit ervan te verzekeren. Dergelijke garanties voor blijvende open access maken Chamilo LMS uniek als e-learning systeem.

Voel je ook vrij om bij te dragen aan Chamilo! U kunt dit doen door het gebruik ervan te promoten, fouten te rapporteren, verbeteringen voor te stellen, het (of de bijbehorende handleidingen) in uw moedertaal te vertalen, of zelfs zelf extensies of fixes te ontwikkelen.
