Glossary Terms Generator
The AI Glossary Terms Generator helps you build your course glossary faster by automatically producing term definitions from a topic or subject area. You review each suggested term and definition before adding anything to the glossary.
Accessing the Glossary Terms Generator
The generator is available from the Glossary tool, provided that:
AI helpers are enabled at the platform level
At least one AI text provider is configured
Open the Glossary tool from the course homepage and look for the Generate with AI button in the toolbar.
How to Generate Terms
Click Generate with AI
Enter a topic or subject area — describe the domain you want terms for (e.g. "introductory organic chemistry" or "project management methodologies")
Optionally specify the number of terms to generate
Select an AI provider if more than one is configured
Click Generate
The AI produces a list of terms with definitions that you can then review.
Reviewing and Adding Terms
Generated terms are shown as suggestions. Before adding them to your glossary:
Check accuracy — Verify that definitions are correct for your course level and context
Edit wording — Adjust the definition to match your teaching style or course conventions
Remove duplicates — Skip any terms already in your glossary or outside the scope of your course
Select what to add — Choose which terms to import; you do not have to accept all of them
Once satisfied, confirm the selection and the terms are added to your glossary.
Tips
Be specific with your topic — Broad topics produce general definitions; a narrower topic gives you more course-relevant terms
Always review — AI definitions may be simplified or imprecise. Check each one before publishing to learners
Edit after importing — You can always update a term's definition later from the glossary management view
Combine with manual entries — Use the generator to get a starting set, then add discipline-specific terms manually
