Inbox

The Inbox is Chamilo's private messaging system — asynchronous, e-mail-like messages between you and other users on the platform, independent of any specific course.

Accessing Your Inbox

Click the Inbox Inbox icon in the top bar. A red badge shows how many unread messages you have. If this icon isn't there at all, your administrator has disabled platform messaging.

Reading and Replying

Your inbox lists received messages, showing which are unread. Open one to read it, and use Reply to respond — you can include several recipients in a reply at once, useful for keeping a small group of people in the loop without setting up a formal course or social group.

Replying From E-mail

If your administrator enabled e-mail replies for direct messages, the notification e-mail for a Chamilo message has a special reply address. You can reply from your normal e-mail client; Chamilo validates the reply and adds it to the same conversation in your Inbox.

Send the reply from the same e-mail address registered on your Chamilo account and write your response above the Reply above this line marker. Not every platform notification is replyable — this feature applies to direct-message notifications when the administrator has configured inbound mail.

Composing a New Message

Click the new message New message button, choose one or more recipients, write a subject and body, and send. Just like a reply, a new message can go to multiple people at once.

Tabs and Actions

Besides your Inbox, a tab shows just your Unread messages, and another shows Sent — what you've sent, for your own reference. A search box lets you find a message by keyword. The buttons above the list let you compose a new message, refresh, delete selected messages, and mark selected messages as read.

E-mail Notification Status

If your administrator enabled e-mail open tracking, the Sent list can show an E-mail notifications date for messages whose notification tracking image was requested. This is only an indication that the e-mail may have been opened; it is not proof that it was read.

Message Tags

If your platform uses message tags, you'll see a tag list in your inbox you can click to filter messages by that tag — handy for keeping related conversations easy to find as your inbox grows.

Relationship to Other Messaging Features

The Inbox is independent of the course Chat tool and of the floating chat panel used for direct messaging and the AI Tutor — each is a genuinely separate feature, even though they all involve exchanging messages. The Social Network, if enabled, uses this same Inbox for private messaging rather than having its own.

Tips

  • Check the badge on the Inbox icon — it's the quickest way to notice new messages without opening the page.

  • Use the Inbox for anything that isn't tied to a single course — course-specific discussion generally belongs in that course's Forum or Chat instead.

  • The Social Network's "Messages" link goes to this same Inbox — you're not missing a separate mailbox if you reach it from there instead of the top bar.
