Chat

The chat tool provides real-time text messaging within a course. It is useful for quick communication, live Q&A sessions, or informal discussions.

Using the Chat

  1. Open the Chat tool from the course homepage

  2. Type your message in the text field at the bottom

  3. Press Enter or click the send button to post

All enrolled users who are currently in the chat room can see messages in real time.

Chat Features

  • Real-time messaging — Messages appear instantly for all participants

  • Message history — Previous messages are visible when you enter the chat

  • User presence — See who is currently in the chat room

As a Teacher

As the course teacher, you can:

  • Monitor discussions — Review chat history to track learner engagement

  • Find chat archives in Documents — The chat tool automatically mirrors messages into HTML files in the Documents tool, organised by day and by scope (course / session / group), so the conversation persists beyond the live session

If the platform setting "restrict chat to coach" is enabled by the administrator, only coaches can chat with learners; otherwise everyone enrolled in the course can participate.

Tips for Using Chat Effectively

  • Schedule chat sessions — Let learners know in advance when you will be available for live chat (use the Agenda tool)

  • Set ground rules — Establish expectations for respectful communication

  • Use for quick questions — Chat works best for short exchanges; use the Forum for longer, structured discussions

If your platform has video conferencing configured (BigBlueButton or Zoom), consider using that for live sessions where voice and video would be more effective. See Video Conferencing.
